Study on the impact of the food chain in Finland

Published:

According to a study by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), the impact of the food chain on Finland's national economy and regions is highly significant.

The food sector not only provides vital food security and a substantial number of jobs, but it also pays billions of euros in taxes and generates considerable added value for the Finnish economy.

The food industry directly employs 39,500 people in Finland. Considering the connections to other sectors, the food industry employs nearly 100,000 people in total. This accounts for almost four percent of the entire country’s employment.

– The food industry has a massive employment impact within the food chain, but also outside of it, such as in primary production, transportation, packaging material manufacturing, and hospitality industry, says Mikko Käkelä, CEO of Finnish food and drink Industry federation ETL.

Luke’s study, published in May 2024, confirms that the food sector is a pillar of Finland’s national economy. The entire chain directly and indirectly employs 320,000 people, which is nearly 12 percent of all employed persons.

The food chain generates about 11 billion euros in tax revenue, accounting for ten percent of all taxes and tax-like revenues.

The added value produced by the food industry to the Finnish national economy is 6.9 billion euros, considering both direct and indirect effects. The total added value of the entire food chain is over 19 billion euros, which represents nine percent of the country’s total added value.

The food industry produces the most added value in the food chain, when both direct and indirect effects are included.
